The fragments of the original Antikythera mechanism. The reconstruction in the previous photo was made after many x- and gamma-radiographs helped to illustrate how it was pieced together. It was found in a shipwreck off of the island of Antikythera in 1900. It is almost unbelievable that a mechanism with over 30 gears and such miniaturized complex parts was made so long ago. There are many mysteries surrounding this artifact still - we still don't know what it was for or how it was made, since concepts such as gravity, and planetary motion had not even been described at the time of its creation.
