A reconstruction of the Antikythera mechanism. This was a sort of calculator designed to tell the user the positions of the sun, moon or other astronomical information such as the location of other planets. Amazingly, this mechanism was dated to approximately 80 BC, and was probably made on Rhodes. It has been nicknamed the first “mechanical computer.” As far as we know, technological artifacts of similar complexity were not created until thousands of years later.
